Analysing Action-Comedy Marketing Campaigns - 'The Fall Guy’

The final action comedy marketing campaign I will be looking at is for 'The Fall Guy'.

The trailer for 'The Fall Guy' contains the following conventions of the action-comedy genre:
  • Blend of action and comedy - humorous reaction/funny dialogue occur in same trailer as dangerous stunt sequences which emphasise the action-comedy hybrid
  • Relatable protagonist - who is portrayed as funny, unserious and flawed in many ways
  • Narrative structure - of a stuntman who’s thrown into a real action plot which creates irony whilst having almost a ‘princess’ as a reward
  • Constant use of close up reaction shots - which enabled the audience to understand whether they’re shocked or adding humour in certain moments
  • Upbeat soundtrack - balance between upbeat music and intense music that emphasise tension and signify action

The poster for 'The Fall Guy' contains the following conventions of the action-comedy genre:
  • Mise-en-scene  - including explosions behind them, car chase and ordinary clothes which is more typical of action-comedy films
  • Facial expressions - exaggerated and emphasises the film's plot about the protagonists' relationship with one another
  • Bold font with contrasting colours - use of bold sans serif font with bold yellow colour is typical of action-comedy genre as it reinforces the lighter tone of the film
  • Reference to other films - seen more often in action-comedies rather than action films and it references a film which also belongs to action-comedy genre. Done as a way of connecting with action-comedy fans who enjoyed 'Bullet Train' as the genre has a wide appeal to a range of audiences

The Instagram page for 'The Fall Guy' emphasises the action-comedy genre by combining high energy stunt clips and pictures with humorous engaging content. Posts frequently show behind the scene clips of dangerous stunts and sequences from the film with strong action elements. However, there is also balance with comedic captions and lighthearted interactions between the cast, especially Ryan Gosling‘s character which reinforces the comedy side, which emphasises the hybrid genre to fans who browse through their social media platforms.
