Analysing Action Film Trailers - 'Wrath of Man'

 The fifth theatrical trailer I will be looking at is from the film 'Wrath of Man'.

The trailer for 'Wrath Of Man' has many conventions that a typical action film trailer would have. As the trailer begins, the audience instantly hear quick tense music which engages them straight away and creates a sense of urgency. The production company idents that appear on screen just after are well-known for producing some iconic action films, therefore the audience gets an inclination that the genre is action. Fast paced editing is used as the audience witness dangerous fight scenes; this create excitement for the audience and the fast cuts match perfectly with the beat of the music which creates an intensity, almost a warning sign to the audience for what is about to come.

As the audience hear one of the characters say “do you know how dangerous this job is?” which instantly creates excitement for the audience as they expect the trailer to be filled with action. This cuts to a group of men who are in the back of a truck wearing military costumes, protective helmets whilst holding big automatic guns. This instantly makes it clear what genre the film is. The iconography used throughout the rest of the trailer is also typical of the action genre as it includes all different sorts of weapons ranging from pistols to assault rifles, reinforcing the theme of violence in the film. The protagonist's smart suit emphasises his professionalism and skill. His calm figure behaviour portray him as a typical action hero, as he doesn’t look worried during the big shootouts. Finally, the fact that the film is set in urban location with many explosions reinforces the high stakes within the genre.

Titles are shown throughout the trailer of the main actor's name and the director's name, which helps the audience identify genre as they are both known to have taken part in action films previously. The plot is revealed through exposition and therefore the audience work out that the film revolves around some sort of vengeance, which is a typical theme for action film films A sinister thrilling tone is created through the trailer through the muted colour palette and the intense music which plays throughout to give the film a sense of urgency and danger. Additionally, the continuous use of fades to black also create a thrilling tone as they make the audience wait a bit longer and make them eager to watch on and find out what actually happens in the film. 

The cinematography used throughout is typical of the action genre. For instance in the fight scenes, tight framing is frequently used to intensify the scene and to make the audience feel as if they’re in the fight. It could also symbolise a sense of the protagonist being trapped and every fight he goes into is brutal no matter how skilled he is. The audience witness lots of close-ups of the protagonist's face so they can see his serious expressions and his dedication to get revenge for his son.
