Comparing Theatrical Trailers - 'We Live in Time'

The second theatrical trailer I am going to look at is for the film 'We Live in Time'.

The theatrical trailer for 'We Live in Time' contains the following typical conventions:

The theatrical trailer for 'We Live in Time' has many conventions for a typical theatrical trailer. The trailer begins with the production company ident for A24 at the beginning over images from the film. Throughout the trailer a voiceover is used to deliver exposition and alongside lots of shots from the film it helps the audience understand the narrative of the movie. Throughout the trailer there are lots of title cards used to convince the audience to watch the film when it is released. They include a reference to the director's previous work ('Brooklyn'), vague release date (This Fall), a tagline which is over five different images ('There’s no time like the past present future'), the names of the main actors (Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh) and the awards they have been nominated for (Academy Award nominees). Additionally, the emotional music used in the trailer links to the genre of the film and draws viewers into the story, which is a technique used in theatrical trailers to make audiences feel like they have to go and watch the film.

At the end of the theatrical trailer we see:
  • Film title over a black screen ('We Live in Time')
  • Cast and crew on the billing block
  • Production company logos on billing block (A24, Studiocanal, Film 4, Sunnymarch and Shoebox films)
