Comparing Teaser Trailers - 'Avatar: The Way of Water'

The second teaser I am going to analyse is from the film 'Avatar: The Way Of Water'.

The teaser trailer for 'Avatar: The Way of Water' has many conventions of a typical teaser trailer. As soon as the teaser begins we see the production company idents, which are 20th Century Fox and Light Storm Entertainment. However, straight after, the audience get immersed into a mystical world as slow peaceful music (which was used from the first film) begins to play, which engages them in the teaser and makes them excited and nostalgic. Additionally, the audience witness lots of extreme long shots of the other-worldly setting as well as seeing many close ups of familiar characters. This immerses the audience straight from the beginning as they are thrown into a world of tranquility, butone they are already familiar with. This is reinforced through the long takes and the slow fade in/outs from black to give it almost a magical feel. The teaser mainly focuses on the epic iconography and relies mainly on the calm music, therefore the audience don’t realise no dialogue has been used as they feel sucked into the film. It’s only near the end of the film that some dialogue is used, however there is still minimal plot revealed to the audience.

At the end of the teaser we see:
  • The film title ('Avatar: The Way of Water') which is over a black screen
  • Brief release date which is also seen half way through the teaser (This December)
